Mentre lei si prepara, lui l’aspetta sul divano suonando la chitarra. Sono stati invitati a una festa importante e stanno facendo tardi. Spazientito, lui decide di salire nuovamente a chiamarla. La trova ancora indecisa sull’abito da indossare ed esclama: “Sei meravigliosa, ok? Dobbiamo andare o faremo tardi.” Quindi scende al piano di sotto e torna alla sua chitarra.
Nasce così Wonderful Tonight, la sera del 7 settembre 1976 mentre Eric Clapton aspetta la sua Pattie Boyd. Sono attesi alla festa in onore di Buddy Holly, organizzata annualmente da Paul e Linda McCartney.
A Clapton il brano non piacque subito e fu Ronnie Wood a convincerlo a tenerla. Incisa nel 1977, sarà uno dei brani più amati e più proposti ai concerti. Nel 2007 venne suonata anche in occasione del Live in San Diego, venendo inserita nell’omonimo album pubblicato nel 2016.
